  1.                 CLC OPHTHALMOMETER MEASURING TECHNIQUE

  3. The ophthalmometer measures the 
  4. curvature of the cornea by reflecting 
  5. mires (images) from the cornea and taking 
  6. readings from two points on the corneal 
  7. surface using a doubling technique 
  8. (see How the Keratometer Works  -the 
  9. ophthalmometer works by the same 
  10. optical method ).  Since the measurement 
  11. is made from just these two small points, 
  12. the ophthalmometer only gives an 
  13. approximation of the central curvature 
  14. and does not give information 
  15. about the whole surface.

  17. The separation of the two points 
  18. on the cornea will vary with the 
  19. corneal curvature.  For the 
  20. average corneal curvature the 
  21. separation is about 3.2 mm.
